What Are The Benefits Of Individual Counseling?

In today’s world, mental health issues seem to be on the rise. As a society, we like to label any emotion out of the norm as unbalanced and needing professional help. But what does this mean? Most people think of counseling as being group sessions with a therapist or psychiatrist. That may be one type of therapy, but it isn’t the only option for people facing mental health issues in their lives. We can be better equipped to help ourselves by learning about mental health counseling.

There Are Many Benefits Of Individual Therapy:

  • Individual therapy is more personalized. You will be able to address the issues that most impact you specifically.

  • Provides a safe space for you to explore your feelings and experiences without judgment or criticism.

  • Helps you understand what patterns exist in your relationships with others, providing insight into emotional conflicts and difficult situations within these relationships.

  • Can help identify coping strategies, solutions, and skills which are specific to you while providing opportunities for personal growth and change

  • Can help you find and develop an understanding of your own value and strengths, and learn to see your own worth in the world.

  • Assists you in developing skills for self-soothing, self-awareness, pushing through disappointments, learning how to face limitations, and dealing with tough decisions in life that may be difficult to make on one's own.

  • Can help you learn how to better communicate your needs to others when dealing with conflict issues, and improving these communication skills will positively affect your social interactions.

  • Provides the opportunity to gain insight into one's own personal history in order to understand how past experiences may affect current relationships and choices.

What Are The Types Of Individual Therapy?

The primary purpose of individual therapy is to help clients with life's problems. An advantage to working one-on-one is there is greater opportunity for the therapist and client to focus on issues that are specific to the client, rather than focusing on issues common in a group setting. One can work more intensively with individuals who have similar goals and interests. Our therapist center even has African American Female Counselors that can help you today.

There are many therapeutic approaches that a qualified therapist may use: Psychodynamic, Client-Centered, Gestalt, Play Therapy, Family Systems Approach, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive/Behavioral (CBT), or Dialectical Behavior Therapy, just to name a few--but they all have some things in common. They exist as ways of helping an individual handle their problems, and achieve a better life.

What Personal Issues Are Treated Through Individual Therapy?

There are many reasons people seek help through individual therapy:

  • A group setting may not provide the client with adequate time with the therapist to handle their personal problems/issues; an individual can work intensively on one or few issues at a time in order to move forward.

  • Intimacy is built over time, from relationship to relationship, hence the reason individuals can be more open about difficult topics that they would be in a group setting. The intimacy between two people working together can facilitate problem-solving, and increase self-esteem.

  • By working out one's innermost thoughts/feelings with another human being, the individual is potentially risking more than if speaking in a group setting; hence the importance of having a good relationship with one's therapist. It is easier, to be honest, and open about personal feelings/thoughts by working closely with another person rather than being in a group environment.

  • One-on-one therapy can provide much-needed accountability since the individual will have to keep up with the sessions on their own. There is less room for slacking off when there are fewer people involved.

  • The client and therapist interact uninterrupted on issues that would be difficult to handle in a group setting (e.g., abuse, life-threatening illnesses, suicidal tendencies).

Is Individual Therapy Effective?

There is no one "right" approach to individual therapy. However, the goals of the psychotherapist will remain relatively consistent: helping clients develop insight into themselves and their issues; helping clients acquire effective coping skills for solving current problems or preventing future ones; allowing individuals to explore more of who they are by developing a deeper level of self-awareness; and finally encouraging healthy relationships with friends and family members, as well as other significant people in their lives.

The reason why it is so important to have a qualified/experienced therapist is that there are different theories that explain human behavior and experience (i.e., CBT focuses on changing negative thoughts - like thought policing; whereas psychodynamic views negative feelings as something that needs to be explored), and the therapist will assess the client and decide what approach fits best. The wrong fit can be detrimental to the therapy process, or even worse, dangerous.

What Is Individual Mental Health Counseling?

Individual therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on one person and his/her thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is also called “couch” therapy because it can be done with the therapist sitting next to the client on a couch. Individual therapy is most often used to treat mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety disorders. It can be particularly helpful for people with a mental illness who also have problems at home, school or work.
